Title Fight – Floral Green

September 5, 2012

Here’s what you’re going to do. You’re going to preorder this album. Then listen to it once through. Then sit in awe of how much better this band has gotten. Then, put “Head In The Ceiling Fan” on repeat, and get weird. You can thank me later.

Preorder.

Get Weird.

After weeks of scouring the interwebz, I finally found the records I’ve been patiently waiting to hear for years. These are the final recording’s of L’antietam, the band that introduced me and so many of my friends into the scene that we now love. Family and Arthur Carr will always have a special place in my heart, and are still extremely enjoyable to listen to today. But enough about me, already.

Dark Brew is a 6 minute long, 4 part hardcore head-rush of a song. The pace is unrelenting and the guitars are bludgeoning.  The song shifts periodically in mood, but never lets up on intensity. This is L’antietam at their heaviest and grungiest, and it feels so good. Rock Bottom, on the other hand, feels like a continuation of where the band left off with Arthur Carr. It’s moody, full of tempo changes, and retains the interwoven, subtle melodies that first attracted me to the band. It’s bittersweet, finally hearing the songs I’ve anticipated for years, but knowing that I’ll never see this band again. If you’re into it, I suggest buying the double 7″ quickly. I’m sure it’s going to sell out.

Give em your money.

Give it a listen.

Animal Skins – B EP

May 14, 2012

Alright, so this post is long overdue. In fact so overdue that I’m no longer sure how active they are. Regardless, this band of guys from the great city of Boise, ID accomplished something really awesome with this EP. Imagine Botch with some punk-inspired grooves and an overarching stoner-metal influence. Really impressive blend of technical know-how with an intentional lo-fi sound. I’m not sure how they acquired a picture of my uncle for the cover of this EP, but that’s cool, I guess.

I happened to catch this band in Missoula, MT in one of a few of their iterations while they were playing a couple shows with our friends, Corsair Wolves. They played a show that I would describe as haunting. During their entire set, most of the people peacefully drinking their beers in that basement became afraid for their safety in the most pleasant way possible. Anyway, I hold this band in high regard and hope they continue to put out awesome stuff at some point. Also, a few of the dudes are now playing in another really cool band called Sinews that will hopefully getting some more stuff done soon.

Follow the link below to download both the B EP, as well as the A EP (which is also pretty cool), and maybe message about buying a physical copy (the big cartel link doesn’t work!).

Defeater is a band that probably doesn’t even need an introduction. They are truly one of the leaders of modern hardcore in my opinion. This is their new album, due out in a week or so. On this album, the band refines their already polished sound even further. At times melodic, at times dark and brooding, this album is always intense, passionate, and intricate. To top it off, Defeater has written 4 acoustic songs to end the album with, which are all very good. The contrast of the heavy songs and acoustic songs makes for a very interesting and rewarding listen. Best hardcore album of 2011 so far? I’d say so.

Edit: At first, I thought that song 10 cut out before it was supposed to. Max has informed me that this is the way it’s supposed to be on the album. Apparently, in the context of the album’s overarching story, the speaker gets pushed into a train, so the song ends. Don’t quote me on that though.
